BRANDS HATCH, UK, September 5, 2010 – Germany’s Ralf Schumacher, whose AMG Mercedes C-Class car carries the Laureus logo, had to retire at Brands Hatch in the seventh leg of the DTM touring car championship.
Former Formula One star Schumacher said: “Right after the start it was very close between Mattias Ekström, Oliver Jarvis and me and our cars touched briefly. I lost two positions, but afterwards I drove a solid race. After my pit stop I had a short off into the gravel and then my steering didn’t work correctly, so I drove back to the pits.”
The winner of a thrilling race at the Brands Hatch circuit near London was Mercedes driver Paul Di Resta – his first victory of the year.
Ralf Schumacher and AMG Mercedes are working together to help raise the awareness of Laureus and to encourage more people to become involved in the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Mercedes-Benz is a Global Partner of Laureus.
Former British Formula One driver David Coulthard, who is also a competitor in the DTM Championship, driving an AMG Mercedes C-Class, finished 12th at Brands Hatch and afterwards explained why he is such an enthusiast for the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation.
David said: “I think I have been very lucky in my life and I recognise that. My mother was always doing a lot for children’s charities and the mentally handicap and that was just part of my childhood, going to raise funds to help others who are less fortunate. So for me it has never been a chore to recognise that as a normal, healthy individual that has been given this great opportunity to be paid to compete in the sport that I love, the least I can do is to spend time and to do various events. The actual Laureus Awards themselves is the glamour in the whole event. We get a great turn-out of amazing sport people and ex-sports stars and celebrities and that is the catalyst which is then used to raise funds and promote all the good causes around the world.”
He also talked about his current challenge in DTM. He said: “Driving a DTM car is quite different to that of driving a single seater (Formula One) car, but that was part of the appeal. I know DTM well through many years of association with Mercedes, so I’ve been to a number of events. I was curious to know whether I could adapt to touring car driving, so far its still work-in-progress, but I’m enjoying the challenge.”
During the year there will be four more DTM races – in Germany, China and Italy. The next DTM race will take place at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in Germany on September 19.
