Zak, 14, from Gosford Hill School, Oxfordshire, was recognised as ‘participant who had progressed the most’ during the Finals Day of the Mercedez-Benz sponsored Laureus MotorV8 programme on Friday 16th July.
Zak was one of a group of 6 boys from Gosford Hill School taking part in the 6-week course, alongside boys and girls from across Oxfordshire. He was chosen to take part in the project to acknowledge the progress and effort he has made both in school and in his emotional life. He acted as a role model for the younger boys and was a sensible and stabilising influence on the group. He has limited experience and found the opportunity to visit places, meet other young people and talk to adults really rewarding.
On receiving the award, Zak said how much he had enjoyed the course- especially the go-karting and learning how to take apart and put the vehicles back together. He said, “I have always wanted to be a mechanic. In fact it was my dream from when I was very young.” After completing school he wants to apply for a place on a mechanics course run by Trax.
This finals day gives the Laureus MotorV8 participants a chance to meet Mercedes-Benz staff and get hands-on with the newest Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Zak described the day as “Brilliant- to observe the cars and how the trucks work” He would especially like to own a Mercedes SLS gullwing one day, and he and his friends had great fun posing in front of it for photos.
The project provides opportunities for vulnerable young people to learn new skills and expand their horizons. Gosford Hill School use the project as a way of engaging students who may otherwise be disaffected by school, and also as a way of rewarding those who have shown real effort.
