After three days of hectic interviews, highly competitive golf and racing with the Academy members, a game of football with local children should have been a relaxing way to start the day of the awards – It wasn’t! But then what do you expect when professional sportsmen and women take part, namely Daley Thompson, Butch James, Hugo Porta and Nawal El Moutawakel. Watching the launch of a new Laureus project right here in Abu Dhabi really showcased the work the academy does week in, week out.

Arriving in Abu Dhabi, the first thing that hits you is the heat which is more than welcome when you’ve travelled from one of Europe’s coldest winters! The second is the venue for the Laureus World Sports Awards, The Emirates Palace, which is quite simply breathtaking. How many hotels have you been to where your first reaction is to take out your camera-phone? Add to that the news that some of Hollywood’s biggest stars will be joining the greatest names in sport and you can imagine the sense of excitement here in the capital of the UAE.

Last Saturday morning saw members of the Laureus running team brave the very changeable (and very British) weather conditions, to take part in a training session with Laureus World Sports Academy Member and double decathlon Gold Medal Winner Daley Thompson at the Millennium Arena in Battersea Park.
The Laureus running team is made up of all those who are taking part in one of this year’s premier running events to raise funds for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Distances range from a 10k to a full marathon! After a warm welcome from the man in question it was time to get down to some real work and the warm-up. A simple couple of laps of the track were spiced up by instructions from Daley to touch the ground, jump in the air and run backwards. Some strides, of increasing length and speed, were followed by dynamic stretches overseen by the double gold medal winner. The it was then time to go for a run around the beautiful environs of the park and along the picturesque Thames.
Despite the weather’s best attempt to put a dampener on things, it never managed more than a bit of drizzle, which after all our exertions was actually rather refreshing. The participants had a very enjoyable experience and were delighted to have some extra inspiration for their tough training regimes:
Participant Mark Healy:
‘Many thanks for all of your efforts, and the efforts of the rest of the team, in organising what was a really helpful and fun training event yesterday! The organisation was really good and the programme of activities and input from all of your team members made for a great little training session.
The enthusiasm and commitment of everyone involved was very clear, and it was great to be pushed a little harder than usual by the guys in your training team.’
Laureus would like to thank all those who came to take part and especially to Daley Thompson and all his team who created such a fun and impactful training session.
