Fabio Capello stated the importance of football’s role as a tool for social development at the launch of Eleven, a book featuring stories of how the sport is changing lives around the world. The event was also supported by FA Chairman Lord Triesman.
The England coach said: “We are a rich sport and we need to put ourselves at the service of those who can help the poor.”
Speaking about the case study featuring Celloane, a 16 year old girl from Lesotho who lost her parents and is now a Kick4Life trainer, Capello added: “Her story is inspiring to me. She could have been dragged into prostitution but because of football she wasn’t. This summer all eyes will be on South Africa. I hope that we can harness the power of the game to transform the lives of some of the world’s poorest children.”
The launch at Wembley was hosted by football commentator Jonathan Pearce and included speeches by Eleven author and Kick4Life cofounder Steve Fleming and streetfootballworld Managing Director Juergen Griesbeck. It was also attended by a range of leading organisations in the sector including Magic Bus, Beyond Sport, 1Goal, Street League and Spirit of Soccer.
