The first Street League women’s only match day was held on Wednesday 15th July 2009, celebrating and marking the increased participation of women on Street League’s programmes.
Fifty fantastic players from eight different teams took part. Two teams were from Street League’s own training sessions – Street League Ladies and Somers Town. Six were community teams from all over London: Crouch End Tigers, Camden Town, Look Ahead, Winchester Project, Diversity and Charlton Angels.
Everyone was a winner. The football was an excellent quality and great to watch, team spirits were high and all players showed the right attitude and created a really good atmosphere on the day – thank you players!
In partnership with the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, Street League is working to lower barriers for participation and facilitate the inclusion and integration of under-represented groups in sport, and the tournament was really inspiring as a launch of a sustainable platform of higher visibility and participation for women.
Last year Street League had over 200 female participants on the Street Sports programme, and this year we aim to get 300 women participating in football and fitness sessions across London, benefiting from the fun, the social arena, the opportunities to do coaching and instructor courses, volunteering and support with routes to education, training and employment that Street League has to offer.
Thank you to everyone who took part and who made it such a great match day! Special thanks go to Laureus for providing prizes and to the outstanding referees Ashiqa and Bobby who both have done coaching badges and refereeing courses with Street League and were crucial to the success and good atmosphere of the day!
The next match day is at Mile End Park Stadium Wednesday 12th August. Hope to see you there!
