Sore feet, sore bum but a great sense of satisfaction.

The final day was a huge success and I feel we were able to raise decent levels of awareness and get our message across to the right people.

15 of us set off from Wembley stadium in the morning under fairly clear skies. Being England this didn’t last very long and, after about 15 minutes, the showers came and we were all drenched. Our spirits remained high, helped by Lucy and Tola from Choice FM who you’d expect to have smiles on their faces whatever the weather. We stopped off at Hyde Park to pick up a slightly wet DJ Spoony and headed south towards the river. I don’t know what it is about politicians but by the time we arrived at Conservative HQ, the sun was shining and David Cameron, a keen cyclist, rode out to join us.

After a short but pretty crazy journey through, round and between London traffic, we all arrived at the Urban Stars project in Lambeth. There we were greeted by fellow Academy members Boris Becker, Gary Player and Steve Waugh, and everyone took part in various project activities. I was particularly impressed by the efforts of David Cameron whose footballing exploits have been noted in today’s papers.

An hour later, 5 of us set off for 10 Downing Street where I delivered the report to Gordon Brown, Tessa Jowell and Richard Taylor, the father of murdered teenager, Damilola Taylor. I am delighted that we were able to have a meeting with the Prime Minister. I have stressed that although sport does not provide a total solution to the problems of youth crime and gang violence, it can be a significant and effective part of the process.

An important moment for me. Meeting the PM with fellow Academy members.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has helped to make this possible. In particular, I would like to thank my fellow Academy member, Hugo Porta, who rode with me on every leg of the journey and gave me invaluable support.
